Vaiśākhī

Baisakhi (Vaisakhi, ਵਿਸਾਖੀ) is the first day of the solar month of Vaisakh, the New Year of the traditional Punjabi solar calendar. It marks the harvest of the rabi crop, and farmers across Punjab and Haryana give thanks for the year's yield.

For Sikhs the day is also Khalsa Sajna Diwas: on Vaisakhi of 1699 at Anandpur Sahib, Guru Gobind Singh founded the Khalsa. Gurdwaras hold kirtan and processions (nagar kirtan), and many families take a holy dip in rivers.

Fairs, Bhangra and Gidda fill the day, and new clothes and sweets are shared with family and neighbours.
