Bhaiya Dooj

Bhāī Dūj (also known as Yama Dvitīyā, Bhāī Phoṭā, or Bhāubīj) falls on the second day of Kārtika's bright fortnight, two days after Dīpāvalī. It is the most beloved annual celebration of the bond between brother and sister: the sister applies a tilaka (auspicious mark) on her brother's forehead and prays for his long life, while the brother gifts her tokens of love and pledges his protection.

The festival's origin is traced to Yamunā inviting her brother Yama, the god of death, to her home for a meal. Pleased by her hospitality and love, Yama declared that any brother who receives a tilaka from his sister on this day and bathes in the Yamunā river will be freed from the fear of untimely death. That is why the day is called Yama Dvitīyā.

In West Bengal and Bihar the festival is called Bhāī Phoṭā and comes one day after Kālī Pūjā. Sisters prepare special sweets and perform āratī before applying the sandal-paste tilaka. In Maharashtra it is called Bhāubīj; sisters light a lamp, draw a raṅgolī, and seat the brother ceremonially before the pūjā.

गंगा पूजा यमुना पूजा यमस्य पूजनं तथा। भ्रातृद्वितीया पूजा च क्रियते भ्रातृ-रक्षणे।।
"Ganga is worshipped, Yamuna is worshipped, Yama is honoured: the Bhai Dwitiya puja is performed for the protection of the brother."

Tradition & Practice
🪔
Tilaka Ceremony
The sister applies a candana or kuṅkum tilaka on her brother's forehead, performs āratī with a dīpa, feeds him sweets, and prays for his long and healthy life.
🌊
Yama and Yamunā
Yama, god of death and dharma, is Yamunā's twin brother. His blessing on this day is said to shield the brother from untimely death and disease for the year ahead.
🎁
Gifts and Feasting
Brothers traditionally gift clothes, jewellery, or money to their sisters. Sisters prepare the brother's favourite meal and sweets like khīr, pūā, or coconut lāḍū.
✋
Sister's Vow
Some traditions require the sister to fast until she performs the tilaka. In Bengal sisters recite a formal phoṭā mantra: I place this mark on my brother's brow, may Yama's shadow never fall on him.

Yamunā Bathing
Families in Mathurā, Vṛndāvana, and the Gangetic plains bathe in the Yamunā river on this day: especially meritorious since the river's goddess blessed her brother Yama here.
