About

Caitra Navarātri

Caitra Navarātri (also called Vasanta Navarātri, the Spring Nine Nights) begins on the first day of Caitra's bright fortnight (Caitra Śukla Pratipadā), which coincides with Guḍī Pāḍvā (Ugādi) and marks the Hindu New Year in most traditions. For nine days and nine nights, the goddess Durgā is worshipped in her nine forms: the Navadurgā.

The festival begins with Ghaṭasthāpana (also called Kalaśa Sthāpana): installing a sacred pot (kalaśa) filled with water, topped with mango leaves and a coconut, as the symbolic seat of the goddess. The Ghaṭasthāpana muhūrta is highly specific: it must be performed during the first one-third of the day on Pratipadā, and not during the Citrā nakṣatra period. This is why the exact timing from pañcāṅga matters greatly.

Each of the nine days is dedicated to one of Devī's nine forms: Śailaputrī, Brahmacāriṇī, Candraghaṇṭā, Kūṣmāṇḍā, Skandamātā, Kātyāyanī, Kālarātri, Mahāgaurī, and Siddhidātrī. The ninth day, Rāma Navamī, is also the birthday of Lord Rāma: making it doubly auspicious. Devotees conclude the fast on Navamī with Kanyā Pūjā: feeding nine young girls as embodiments of the nine Devīs.

This convergence of the nine-night Devī festival with Rāma's birth is theologically profound: legend holds that Sage Vālmīki prescribed the Devī pūjā to Rāma before his final battle with Rāvaṇa, an akāla (untimely) Navarātri in autumn, but Caitra Navarātri is the original spring observance Rāma himself would have grown up celebrating. The overlap draws worshippers from both Śaiva-Śākta and Vaiṣṇava traditions together under one roof for nine sacred nights.

या देवी सर्वभूतेषु शक्तिरूपेण संस्थिता। नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः।।
Ya devi sarva-bhutesu shakti-rupena samsthita, namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namah.
"Salutations to the goddess who dwells in all beings in the form of Shakti: salutations, salutations, salutations again and again."

Tradition & Practice
🏺
Ghaṭasthāpana
The festival opens with Ghaṭasthāpana: placing a sacred clay pot as the seat of Devī. The precise muhūrta matters: it must fall in the first third of the day, avoiding Citrā nakṣatra.
🌸
Vasanta (Spring) Navarātri
Spring Navarātri coincides with the Hindu New Year (Guḍī Pāḍvā / Ugādi). The goddess is invoked at the moment the new year begins, setting its spiritual tone for the months ahead.
📖
Durgā Saptaśatī
The Devī Māhātmyam (700 verses on Devī's glory) is recited over the nine days: ideally all 700 verses, or the key chapters (Madhu-Kaiṭabha vadha, Mahiṣāsura vadha) on specific days.
🌺
Navadurgā: Nine Forms
Each day venerates one of Devī's nine aspects: Śailaputrī, Brahmacāriṇī, Candraghaṇṭā, Kūṣmāṇḍā, Skandamātā, Kātyāyanī, Kālarātri, Mahāgaurī, and Siddhidātrī on the ninth day.
🙏
Kanyā Pūjā
On Aṣṭamī or Navamī, nine young girls (Kanyā) are invited home, their feet washed, and they are worshipped and fed as living embodiments of the nine Devīs.
☀️
Rāma Navamī
The ninth day of Caitra Navarātri is Rāma Navamī: Lord Rāma's birthday. Temples hold special abhiṣeka (ritual bathing) of Rāma at the noon hour when he was born.

Fasting Traditions
Navarātri fasting is among the most widely observed in Hinduism. Devotees abstain from grains (wheat, rice) and consume only phalāhāra (fruit, milk, and certain root vegetables like sweet potato, arbi, and sabudana). Common fasting foods include sābūdānā khichaṛī, kuṭṭū (buckwheat) pūrīs, siṅghāṛe kī roṭī, and makhānā khīr. Some devotees observe ekabhukta (one meal) or nirjala (waterless) fasts on specific days.
🗺️
North vs South Celebrations
In North India, Caitra Navarātri is observed with garbā dances, Durgā Saptaśatī recitation, and elaborate temple pūjās. In South India, the equivalent observance centres on Caitra Navamī for Rāma's birth; Devī pūjā during Caitra is less prominent but practised in some regions. In Tamil Nadu, this period coincides with Paṅguni Uttaram: a festival linking Skanda and Rāma.
