About

Chollangi Amavasya

Chollangi Amavasya (చొల్లంగి అమావాస్య) is the new moon of Pushya, named after Chollangi near Kakinada, where the Tulyabhaga, one of the seven mouths of the Godavari, flows into the sea.

On this day pilgrims from across the Godavari districts bathe at the sangamam, where river and sea meet, and offer tarpanam to their ancestors. The bath is held to wash away sins, and the temples nearby hold their festival.

The same new moon is Mauni Amavasya across India, kept in silence, with the great bath at the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj.
