About

Dattātreya Jayantī

Dattātreya Jayantī celebrates the birth of Lord Dattātreya on the full moon night of the Mārgaśīrṣa month. Dattātreya is unique in Hindu theology: he is the combined avatar of the Trimūrti (Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Śiva) appearing simultaneously in a single form. His iconography shows three faces (the three gods), six arms (two each), and four dogs (the four Vedas) at his feet, with a cow (Kāmadhenu) standing behind him.

The name Dattātreya means "gift of Atri": he was born to the sage Atri and his devoted wife Anasūyā. When the wives of Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Śiva grew jealous of Anasūyā's fidelity and virtues, they sent their husbands to test her. Unable to break her devotion, the three gods merged into a single infant (Dattātreya) and were born to her as her son.

Lord Dattātreya is the original guru in Hindu tradition: the Ādi Guru. The Avadhūta Gītā records his teachings on non-dualism and liberation. He is said to have had 24 gurus ranging from the earth and sky to a prostitute and a python: teaching that wisdom can be found in every aspect of creation. He is especially revered in Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh, and by the Nātha sampradāya (the tradition of Gorakṣanātha).

त्रिमूर्तिं त्रिगुणाकारं त्रिलोकनाथं ईश्वरम्। ब्रह्मविष्णुशिवाकारं दत्तात्रेयं नमाम्यहम्।।
Trimurtim trigunakaram trilokanatham Ishvaram, Brahma-Vishnu-Shivakaram Dattatreyam namamy aham.
"I bow to Dattatreya: of the three forms, the three gunas, lord of the three worlds, embodying Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva."

Tradition & Practice
🔱
Trimūrti Avatar
Dattātreya is the only combined form of Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Śiva. His three heads represent creation, sustenance, and dissolution. Worshipping him is said to invoke all three cosmic functions at once.
👨
Son of Anasūyā
Born to sage Atri and the celebrated Anasūyā (whose name means "without jealousy") Dattātreya's very birth was a cosmic test of a devoted wife's virtue passed with perfect grace.
📚
24 Gurus
Dattātreya famously learned from 24 diverse gurus: the earth, water, fire, wind, sky, the moon, the sun, a pigeon, a python, the ocean, a moth, a bee, an elephant, a fish, a deer, a courtesan, and more.

Avadhūta Gītā
The Avadhūta Gītā contains Dattātreya's teachings on Advaita (non-dual) philosophy: among the most direct and radical expressions of the teaching that the self and Brahman are one.

Sacred Iconography
Dattātreya's iconography includes three faces, six arms, four dogs, and a cow. The dogs represent the four Vedas; the cow is Kāmadhenu, the wish-fulfilling divine cow.
🏔️
Nātha Tradition
Dattātreya is the supreme guru of the Nātha sampradāya and is venerated by Vaiṣṇava, Śaiva, and Śākta traditions alike. Major centres of worship are at Gaṅgāpūr (Karnataka) and Narsobachi Wadi (Maharashtra).
