About

Dhūleṭī (Raṅgavālī Holī)

Dhuleti (Dhulandi, Dhulivandan, Rangwali Holi) is the day of colours. It comes the morning after Holika Dahan, the bonfire of Phalguna Purnima, and together the two days make Holi.

The ash of the Holika fire is touched to the forehead in the morning as a blessing, and then the colours begin: gulal and abir, coloured water and pichkaris, music and dancing in the streets. Friends, neighbours and relatives visit one another, old quarrels are set aside, and sweets such as gujiya, malpua and thandai are shared.

The colours recall the play of Sri Krishna with Radha and the gopis in Vraja, where Holi is kept for many days, and the joy of Prahlada's deliverance the night before. In the spring of Phalguna, when the new crop is in, the whole community celebrates together.

Tradition & Practice
🔥
After Holika Dahan
Dhuleti is the morning after the Holika bonfire. The ash of the fire is touched to the forehead as a blessing before the colours begin.
🎨
Gulal and Abir
Dry colours (gulal, abir) are smeared on friends and family, and coloured water is sprayed with pichkaris. Natural colours from flowers such as palash (tesu) are the traditional choice.
🪈
Krishna in Vraja
In Mathura, Vrindavan and Barsana, Holi recalls Sri Krishna's play with Radha and the gopis. Temples there celebrate with flowers, colours and music.
🍬
Sweets and Visits
Homes prepare gujiya, malpua, puran poli and thandai. People visit relatives and neighbours, embrace, and share sweets.
🤝
Setting Quarrels Aside
Holi is a day to forgive and forget: old differences are put aside, and everyone, young and old, plays together.
🌸
Spring Festival
Dhuleti falls at the start of spring, after the Phalguna Purnima. It celebrates the new season and the harvest.
