About

Divaaso

Divāso (also called Āṣāḍhī Amāvasyā) is the new moon day of the Gujarati month of Āṣāḍha, observed across Gujarat as a day of rest and reflection marking the close of the old agricultural half-year and the approach of the monsoon-season Cāturmāsa period.

Households traditionally avoid starting new ventures or travel on this day, and it is common for families to gather, cook special food, and pause the working week: the word 'divāso' itself carries the sense of a day set aside from ordinary activity.

Because Amāvasyā is a tithi that can begin or end at any point during the day, its exact civil-day attribution follows a traditional rule: the day Amāvasyā rules sunrise counts as Divāso only if the tithi continues for at least three muhūrtas past that sunrise; if it ends sooner, Divāso shifts to the previous day instead.
