About

Amavasya is the new moon day, the last day of the Krishna (waning) Paksha each month, when the moon is not visible. It is considered sacred for performing Shraddha (ancestral rites) and Pitru Tarpan. Bathing in holy rivers on Amavasya is believed to wash away sins. Each month's Amavasya has its own significance: Mauni Amavasya in Amanta Pushya (Purnimanta Magha), Hariyali Amavasya in Amanta Ashadha (Purnimanta Shravana), Somvati Amavasya (if on Monday), and more.
