About

Gaṇeśa Caturthi

Gaṇeśa Caturthi (Vināyaka Caturthi, Gaṇeśotsava) falls on the fourth day of Bhādrapada's bright fortnight and celebrates the birthday of Lord Gaṇeśa, the elephant-headed son of Śiva and Pārvatī, the remover of obstacles and lord of new beginnings.

The day begins with Prāṇa Pratiṣṭhā: the ritual installation and consecration of a clay Gaṇeśa idol. The ideal muhūrta for installation falls in the Madhyāhna (midday) period, when Gaṇeśa's energy is said to be most potent. After installation, the idol is worshipped with modaka (his favourite sweet), dūrvā grass, red flowers, and coconut. The Atharvaśīrṣa (Gaṇapati Upaniṣad) is recited throughout the day.

One of the most distinctive aspects of Gaṇeśa Caturthi is the prohibition on viewing the moon on this night. Mythology holds that the Moon laughed at Gaṇeśa for riding a mouse, and Gaṇeśa cursed him with the punishment that anyone who sees the Moon on this night will be falsely accused. If accidentally sighted, the antidote is to listen to or recite the story of Śyamantaka Maṇi from the Bhāgavata Purāṇa.

The festival became a mass public celebration in Pune in 1893 when Bal Gangadhar Tilak transformed it from a household pūjā into a community gathering: using it as a means of uniting people across caste lines during the independence movement.

वक्रतुण्ड महाकाय सूर्यकोटि समप्रभ। निर्विघ्नं कुरु मे देव सर्वकार्येषु सर्वदा।।
Vakratunda mahakaya suryakoti samaprabha, nirvighnam kuru me deva sarvakaryeshu sarvada.
"O large-bodied one with a curved trunk, as radiant as a million suns: O Lord, always remove obstacles from all my undertakings."

Tradition & Practice

Prāṇa Pratiṣṭhā
The ritual consecration (Prāṇa Pratiṣṭhā) of the Gaṇeśa idol is performed at the Madhyāhna muhūrta (midday). At the end of the festival, the idol is immersed (visarjana) in a water body.
🍬
Modaka: His Favourite
Lord Gaṇeśa's favourite offering is the modaka: a sweet dumpling of rice flour filled with coconut and jaggery. Traditionally 21 modakas are offered. Steamed (ukaḍīche) or fried forms are both used.
🌿
Dūrvā Grass
Dūrvā (Bermuda grass) is uniquely sacred to Gaṇeśa. Offering 21 blades tied in a knot is considered more powerful than gold. A story in the Gaṇeśa Purāṇa explains how dūrvā once cooled Gaṇeśa's fire.
🌙
Avoid the Moon
Viewing the moon on Gaṇeśa Caturthi night invites a false accusation (the curse Gaṇeśa placed on the Moon for mocking him). The remedy: recite the Śyamantaka Maṇi story from the Bhāgavata.
📖
Atharvaśīrṣa
The Gaṇapati Atharvaśīrṣa (Gaṇapati Upaniṣad) is the primary text recited on this day: 108 recitations are especially meritorious. It declares Gaṇeśa to be the supreme Brahman.
🎉
Ten-Day Public Festival
Thanks to Lokmānya Tilak (1893), Gaṇeśa Caturthi became a ten-day public festival. Massive community pandals, cultural events, and processions culminate in the grand visarjana on Ananta Caturdaśī.
