About

Gāyatrī Japam

Gāyatrī Japam is the annual repetition of the Gāyatrī Mantra, traditionally performed on Śravaṇa Kṛṣṇa Pakṣa Prathamā, the day after Śravaṇa Pūrṇimā. It is observed by households of all four Vedas (Ṛg, Yajur, Sāma, and Atharva) on the same day, even though each Veda's own Upākarma (sacred-thread renewal) day is decided by its own separate rules.

In a rare case, when Pūrṇimā's transition to Prathamā falls within a narrow window on Śravaṇa Pūrṇimā day itself, Gāyatrī Japam is performed on the same day as Upākarma, before Upākarma rather than the day after; this page reflects that exception automatically when it applies.

Like most pañcāṅga determinations, this has been interpreted somewhat differently across sampradāyas and regional traditions. Please follow the convention observed by your own family or tradition where it differs from what is shown here.

Anchored to Śravaṇa Pūrṇimā
Gāyatrī Japam ordinarily falls the day after the full moon of Śravaṇa māsa.

Same for Every Veda
Ṛg, Yajur, Sāma, and Atharva Veda households all observe it on the same date, regardless of how each Veda's own Upākarma day is separately decided.
