About

Gayatri Japam

Gayatri Japam is the annual repetition of the Gayatri Mantra, traditionally performed on Shravana Krishna Paksha Prathama, the day after Shravana Purnima. It is observed by households of all four Vedas (Rig, Yajur, Sama, and Atharva) on the same day, even though each Veda's own Upakarma (sacred-thread renewal) day is decided by its own separate rules.

In a rare case, when Purnima's transition to Prathama falls within a narrow window on Shravana Purnima day itself, Gayatri Japam is performed on the same day as Upakarma, before Upakarma rather than the day after. This page reflects that exception automatically when it applies.

Like most panchang determinations, this has been interpreted somewhat differently across sampradayas and regional traditions. Please follow the convention observed by your own family or tradition where it differs from what is shown here.
