The cow and her calf, worshipped at the start of Diwali
Govatsa Dwadashi is the Dwadashi before Dhanteras, and the day the festival of lights begins. In Maharashtra it is Vasubaras (वसुबारस), and in Gujarat it is Vagh Baras (વાઘ બારસ).
The cow and her calf are worshipped together as the image of Kamadhenu and her daughter Nandini, the wish-fulfilling cows. They are bathed, adorned with flowers and kumkum, and fed; women pray for the well-being of their children and the family, and many keep a fast.
In Gujarat, Vagh Baras is also the day traders settle their old accounts before the new year's books are opened at Diwali.
