About

Gaurī Tṛtīyā

Gaurī Tṛtīyā, observed on the third day (Tṛtīyā) of the bright fortnight (Śukla Pakṣa) of the month of Bhādrapada, is one of the most important women's festivals in Karnataka and to a somewhat lesser extent in Maharashtra. In Karnataka it is known as Svarṇa Gaurī Vratam (the vow of the golden Gaurī) and it is the single most widely observed festival by married Kannada women. On this day, the day immediately before Gaṇeśa Caturthī, Goddess Gaurī (the golden form of Pārvatī) visits the homes of her devotees. She arrives first, before her son Gaṇeśa, just as in real life a mother precedes her son in entering a new home.

The ritual preparation begins well in advance. Married women procure a Gaurī idol made of gold, silver, or turmeric: the golden color of the idol referencing the epithet Svarṇa Gaurī, "the golden-hued Pārvatī." The idol is installed in the home on a decorated platform (maṇṭapa), surrounded by banana plants, mango leaves, flowers, kuṅkuma, and turmeric. The priest or the senior woman of the household performs the āvāhana (invocation) drawing Goddess Gaurī into the idol from the heavens. Throughout the day, women offer sixteen forms of worship (ṣoḍaśopacāra), chant her names, and sing traditional Kannada songs (bīsu) in her praise. Special foods including hoḷige (sweet flatbread), kaḍubu (steamed rice dumplings), and pānaka (jaggery drink) are prepared and offered.

The festival carries deep significance beyond ritual. Svarṇa Gaurī Vratam is, at its heart, a celebration of the wife-mother figure: Pārvatī herself, who persevered through tapas (austerity) to win Śiva as her husband and went on to become the loving mother of Gaṇeśa and Kārtikeya. Women who observe this vrata pray for the long life and health of their husbands, for the prosperity of their households, and for the welfare of their children. The day after Gaurī's visit, Gaṇeśa arrives, and on Gaṇeśa Caturthī, the two deities are worshipped together. After the conclusion of Gaṇeśa Caturthī celebrations (anywhere from 1.5 to 10 days later), Gaurī is also ceremonially immersed or sent back to her divine abode, mirroring the immersion of Gaṇeśa: mother and son departing together as they arrived together.

गौरी शङ्करसम्भूता हैमी पुष्पसमुद्भवा। हरिप्रिया महादेवी सिद्धिदात्री नमोऽस्तु ते॥
Gaurī śaṅkarasambhūtā haimī puṣpasamudbhavā, haripriyā mahādevī siddhidātrī namo'stu te.
"Born of Shankara, arising like a golden flower, beloved of Hari, the great Goddess who grants all perfections: salutations to you."

Svarṇa Gaurī Idol
The central ritual is the installation of the Svarṇa Gaurī idol: an image of Pārvatī made of gold, silver, or turmeric. "Svarṇa" means gold, reflecting the golden hue associated with Pārvatī in her benevolent, auspicious form. The idol is placed on a decorated maṇṭapa and invoked with the full ṣoḍaśopacāra (16-step) pūjā.
💚
Karnataka's Greatest Women's Festival
Svarṇa Gaurī Vratam is arguably the most important women's festival in Karnataka, observed by virtually every married Kannada Hindu woman regardless of caste or region. Daughters return to their parents' homes to observe it, similar to how women return home for Dīpāvalī or Navarātri in other states: it is both a religious and a family reunion occasion.
📅
The Day Before Gaṇeśa Arrives
Gaurī Tṛtīyā falls on Bhādra Śukla Tṛtīyā, exactly one day before Gaṇeśa Caturthī (the 4th). The sequencing is deliberate and symbolic: the mother arrives before the son. Pārvatī enters the home first, blesses the household, and then makes way for Gaṇeśa's grand arrival the following day. Together, they occupy the home for the Caturthī period.
💛
Gold, Turmeric, and Jewelry
Gold and turmeric are the colors of this festival. Women wear their finest gold jewelry, and turmeric is central to the ritual: rubbed on the idol, mixed into kuṅkuma, and used to make the turmeric Gaurī idol when a metal one is not available. The connection between gold, turmeric, and feminine auspiciousness runs deep in South Indian tradition.
🙏
Daśāvatāra Pūjā and Vrata Kathā
As part of the pūjā, married women observe a vrata (vow) and listen to the Gaurī Vrata Kathā: stories of how devout women received Pārvatī's blessings for marital happiness and children's welfare. The Daśāvatāra (ten avatars of Viṣṇu) pūjā is also sometimes incorporated, reflecting the syncretic Śaiva-Vaiṣṇava nature of Karnataka's religious culture.
🌊
Return of Gaurī: Visarjana
After Gaṇeśa Caturthī ends, Goddess Gaurī is also ceremonially sent back (visarjana): either immersed in water along with Gaṇeśa or placed back in the pūjā room with a farewell ritual. This mirrors the emotional farewell of Gaṇeśa Visarjana: the devotee prays for Gaurī to return next year and to continue blessing the household with her golden grace.
