About

Gujarātī Nava Varṣa

For most of India, Kārtika Śukla Pratipadā (the day after the night of Dīpāvalī) is simply "the day after Dīpāvalī." For Gujarat, it is the beginning of an entirely new year. Called Bestu Varas (literally "best day" in Gujarati) or Nūtan Varṣ (new year), this is the first day of the Vikrama Saṃvat calendar year as followed in the Gujarati tradition. The streets of Surat, Ahmedabad, Vadodara, and Rajkot erupt with the greeting Saal Mubarak ("Happy New Year" in Gujarati) exchanged between families, business partners, neighbors, and friends. The day carries the combined energy of post-Dīpāvalī festivity and the fresh optimism of a new beginning.

Central to the Gujarati New Year celebration is the Chopdā Pūjā: the worship of the business account books. In the Gujarati mercantile tradition, which has produced some of the world's most successful business communities, the transition from one year to the next is as much a commercial event as a religious one. Merchants open fresh account books (chopdā or bahī-khātā), write the Sanskrit invocation Śubh Lābh ("auspicious profit") on the first page, draw a svastika, and invoke Goddess Lakṣmī and Lord Gaṇeśa. The family priest performs the pūjā, and the first entries in the new book are made with ceremony. This practice, while rooted in the pre-digital era, continues today: even businesses that maintain computerized accounts often perform a symbolic Chopdā Pūjā to honor the tradition.

The festive calendar around Bestu Varas extends for five days: Dhanatrayodaśī, Kālī Caturdaśī (Naraka Caturdaśī), Dīpāvalī, Bestu Varas (New Year), and Bhāī Bīj (the day of the brother-sister bond). But the countdown does not end there: five days after Bestu Varas comes Lābha Pañcamī, considered by many Gujaratis to be even more auspicious than New Year's Day itself for starting new commercial ventures, opening new factories, signing contracts, or inaugurating offices. Together, Bestu Varas and Lābha Pañcamī form the twin pillars of the Gujarati business new year, celebrated with equal fervor in Gujarati communities across the world, from London to Singapore to New Jersey.

कार्त्तिके शुक्लपक्षे तु प्रतिपद्युत्सवो महान्। बेस्तुवारस्तु नाम्ना च गुजरात्यां महोत्सवः॥
Kārttike śuklapakṣe tu pratipadyutsavo mahān, bestuvārastu nāmnā ca gujarātyāṃ mahotsavaḥ.
"On the first day of the bright fortnight of Kartika, there is a great festival: called Bestu Varas, Gujarat's grand celebration."

Tradition & Practice
📒
Chopdā Pūjā: Books of Account
The signature ritual of Gujarati New Year is Chopdā Pūjā: the worship of the new account books. Merchants open fresh ledgers, write Śubh Lābh on the first page, draw a Svastika and Lakṣmī's footprints, and offer prayers. The first transaction in the new book is symbolic: it marks the beginning of a new financial year under divine protection.
🪔
Day After Dīpāvalī
Bestu Varas always falls the day after Dīpāvalī: Kārtika Śukla Pratipadā. The night before (Dīpāvalī) is the darkest night of the lunar fortnight; New Year arrives with the waxing of the moon. The timing is deliberate: after the darkness of Amāvasyā comes light, after the old year's conclusion comes renewal. Families wake early, bathe, wear new clothes, and visit temples.
📅
Vikrama Saṃvat New Year
Gujarati New Year marks the first day of Vikrama Saṃvat, the lunar calendar attributed to King Vikramāditya of Ujjain. The Vikrama Saṃvat year runs approximately 56-57 years ahead of the Gregorian calendar. While some North Indian communities begin Vikrama Saṃvat on Caitra Śukla Pratipadā (Rāma Navamī season), Gujaratis and Marwaris follow the Kārtikī tradition: starting the year with Dīpāvalī.

Business New Year
For the Gujarati merchant community (historically one of the world's most commercially successful) New Year and business are inseparable. Shops, factories, and offices are decorated with marigold garlands; Lakṣmī and Gaṇeśa idols are placed at business entrances; sweets are distributed to employees and customers. The day sets the tone for the entire commercial year ahead.
🍬
Regional Foods and Sweets
The New Year table in a Gujarati home is laden with special foods: Sukhḍī (jaggery and ghee squares), Chakli, Gathia, Sev, Mohanthal (gram flour fudge), and Cūrma Lāḍū. The emphasis is on sweet, salty, and crunchy: flavors that symbolize the variety of life's experiences in the year ahead. Families exchange mithai boxes with neighbors and business associates as a gesture of goodwill.

Lābha Pañcamī Connection
Five days after Bestu Varas comes Lābha Pañcamī (Kārtika Śukla Pañcamī), considered the single most auspicious day in the Gujarati calendar to begin a new venture. Those who could not start their new activities on New Year's Day wait for Lābha Pañcamī. The two festivals together create a week-long window of commercial and spiritual renewal unique to Gujarat's tradition.
