About

Hariyālī Tīj

Hariyālī Tīj (Sāvan Tīj, Śrāvaṇ Tīj) falls on the third day of Śrāvaṇa's bright fortnight, in the heart of the monsoon season. Hariyālī means greenery: the festival celebrates the lush, rain-drenched earth and the reunion of Pārvatī with Lord Śiva after 108 births of tapas (penance) in which she steadfastly sought him as her husband.

The festival is predominantly observed in Rajasthan, UP, Haryana, Punjab, and Bihar. Women dress in green (the colour of the monsoon) and don green bangles, glass jewellery, and elaborate mehndi (henna). Swings are hung from trees in gardens and courtyards (a tradition going back to classical Sanskrit poetry) and women swing while singing Tīj songs (gīt) that describe Rādhā waiting for Kṛṣṇa in the rain.

Married women fast and pray for the long life and prosperity of their husbands, while unmarried girls pray to find a husband as devoted as Śiva. In Jaipur, a grand Tīj procession with the idol of Tīj Mātā (Pārvatī) travels through the streets of the old city, accompanied by elephants, camels, folk musicians, and thousands of women in green and yellow. The procession has been a Rajasthan state tradition for centuries.

Tradition & Practice
💚
Green Attire
Hariyālī means greenery. Women dress in green sarees, green bangles, and glass jewellery, applying mehndi to their hands and feet in celebration of the monsoon earth awakening.

Monsoon Joy
Hariyālī Tīj falls at the peak of the southwest monsoon. The festival celebrates the earth's renewal: rivers full, fields green, the air heavy with the scent of petrichor.

Jhūlā (Swing) Tradition
Swings hung from mango or peepul trees are central to Hariyālī Tīj. Women swing and sing Tīj gīt (Tīj songs): love songs of Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa, Pārvatī and Śiva in the rain.
🙏
Pārvatī's Reunion
Hariyālī Tīj commemorates the night Śiva finally accepted Pārvatī as his wife after 108 lifetimes of her devotion. Married women fast for marital happiness; unmarried girls pray for a loving husband.
🎺
Jaipur Tīj Procession
Jaipur's famous Tīj procession (Goddess Tīj Mātā carried in a palanquin through the walled city, flanked by elephants, camels, folk bands, and thousands of women in green) has delighted visitors for centuries.
🎁
Sindhārā: Mother's Gift
A beloved tradition: a married woman's maternal family (maikā) sends a Sindhārā (a basket of new clothes, mehndi, sweets, and bangles) as a gift for Tīj, reaffirming the bond between a woman and her birth home.
