Hayagrīva Jayantī

Hayagrīva Jayantī is observed in Śrāvaṇa māsa (July-August), on the day the Śrāvaṇa nakṣatra prevails at sunrise: a placement that is no coincidence, since Śrāvaṇa māsa itself takes its name from the moon being close to Śrāvaṇa nakṣatra at that month's Pūrṇimā. On this day, devotees commemorate Lord Viṣṇu's manifestation as Hayagrīva: the horse-headed avatar who is the source, protector, and embodiment of all knowledge, the Vedas, and wisdom itself.

The central legend concerns the theft of the Vedas. As Brahmā, the creator, lay in cosmic sleep at the dawn of a new cycle of creation, the sacred Vedas slipped from his lips and were stolen by two asuras, Madhu and Kaiṭabha, who carried them deep into the cosmic ocean. Without the Vedas, creation itself could not properly proceed: the universe's order, ritual, and knowledge were at risk of unraveling. Lord Viṣṇu, to recover what had been lost, assumed the form of Hayagrīva: a being with the head of a horse and the body of a man, radiant like molten gold. In this form, he descended into the depths, defeated the demons, and restored the Vedas to Brahmā, re-establishing the foundation of cosmic and human knowledge.

Because of this act, Hayagrīva is worshipped above all as the deity of knowledge, learning, and wisdom: a role closely paired with, and sometimes worshipped alongside, Goddess Sarasvatī. Students, scholars, teachers, and anyone beginning a course of serious study turn to Hayagrīva for clarity of mind and success in learning. The Hayagrīva Stotra composed by the Vaiṣṇava philosopher-saint Vedānta Deśika is among the most cherished prayers in this tradition, recited by students before examinations and by scholars before undertaking new study. Hayagrīva Jayantī is observed with recitation of Vedic hymns and the Hayagrīva Stotra, prayers for wisdom, and (in many households and institutions) the formal beginning or blessing of a child's or student's studies.

Jñānānandamayaṃ devaṃ nirmalasphaṭikākṛtim, ādhāraṃ sarvavidyānāṃ hayagrīvamupāsmahe.
"We worship Hayagriva: the deity who is the embodiment of knowledge and bliss, of the form of pure, spotless crystal, the very foundation of all learning."

Who Is Hayagrīva?
Hayagrīva, literally "horse-necked" (haya = horse, grīvā = neck), is an avatar of Lord Viṣṇu depicted with a horse's head on a human body, radiant like gold, seated on a white lotus, holding scriptures, a rosary, and hands raised in blessing and knowledge-granting gestures. Unlike the Daśāvatāra's more widely known ten avatars, Hayagrīva belongs to a broader set of Viṣṇu's manifestations, specifically associated with the preservation and transmission of sacred knowledge.

The Vedas Restored
The core legend: as Brahmā slept at the start of a new creation cycle, the asuras Madhu and Kaiṭabha stole the Vedas that had slipped from his mouth and hid them in the cosmic depths. Viṣṇu took the form of Hayagrīva, descended into the ocean, defeated the demons, and returned the Vedas to Brahmā: without which creation's order and ritual knowledge could not continue. This act is why Hayagrīva is revered as the source and guardian of all sacred learning.
🎓
Deity of Knowledge
Hayagrīva is worshipped principally as the god of knowledge, learning, and wisdom: often invoked alongside Goddess Sarasvatī. Students beginning their studies, scholars starting new research, and anyone seeking clarity of mind pray to Hayagrīva. In many Vaiṣṇava households, a child's formal introduction to learning (akṣarābhyāsam / vidyārambham) is timed to invoke his blessing.

The Hayagrīva Stotra
Composed by the great Vaiṣṇava philosopher-saint Vedānta Deśika, the Hayagrīva Stotra is one of the most beloved prayers in the Śrī Vaiṣṇava tradition. Its opening verse (invoking Hayagrīva as "the embodiment of knowledge and bliss") is recited by students before examinations and by scholars before beginning serious study, seeking mental clarity and the removal of ignorance.

Timing: Śrāvaṇa Nakṣatra
Hayagrīva Jayantī falls in Śrāvaṇa māsa on the day the Śrāvaṇa nakṣatra prevails at sunrise: a date that lands close to that month's Pūrṇimā, since the amānta lunar month itself is named Śrāvaṇa because the moon is near Śrāvaṇa nakṣatra at its full moon. This nakṣatra-based dating, rather than a fixed tithi, is part of what makes Hayagrīva Jayantī's observance distinctive.
🙏
Observance
Devotees observe the day with recitation of the Hayagrīva Stotra and Vedic hymns, prayers for wisdom and successful learning, and visits to temples where Hayagrīva is enshrined: most famously at Tiruvahīndrapuram and Yathoktakāri (Tirupputkuḻi) in Tamil Nadu. Offerings of books and writing materials placed before the deity are considered especially auspicious on this day.
