About

Holikā Dahana

Holikā Dahana (Choṭī Holī, Small Holi) is performed on the full-moon night of Phālguna. At dusk or after Bhadrā kāla has passed, communities gather around a large bonfire to burn an effigy of Holikā, the demoness who was destroyed trying to kill the devotee Prahlāda. The bonfire represents the triumph of devotion over evil, and the burning away of our own inner demons.

The story: the demon king Hiraṇyakaśipu wanted his son Prahlāda to worship him instead of Viṣṇu, but Prahlāda refused. After many failed attempts to kill Prahlāda, Hiraṇyakaśipu enlisted his sister Holikā, who had a divine boon of immunity from fire. She sat in a pyre holding Prahlāda in her lap. But Viṣṇu's grace protected Prahlāda: Holikā's boon (which required her to never misuse it) failed, and she burned while Prahlāda walked out unharmed.

The Bhadrā timing is critical: lighting the fire during Bhadrā kāla (a period associated with the shadow-serpent Viṣṭi Karaṇa) is considered inauspicious and potentially harmful. The pūjā must be performed either before Bhadrā begins or after it ends: the exact Pradoṣa-to-Niśīta window without Bhadrā is the correct muhūrta. This is why the precise time from pañcāṅga varies significantly by location.

Families circle the bonfire, offering coconuts, jaggery, and grains. New barley (representing the spring crop) is roasted in the flames. The next morning is Holī: the festival of colours.

असृक्पाभयसंत्रस्तैः कृता त्वं होलि बालिशैः। अतस्त्वां पूजयिष्यामि भूते भूतिप्रदा भव।।
"O Holi, you were made by simple folk terrified of the blood-drinking demons; therefore I worship you. O being, be the giver of prosperity."

Tradition & Practice
🔥
The Bonfire
A large community bonfire is lit in the evening. Families circle it, offering coconut, jaggery, wheat stalks, and new barley to the flames. The ashes are smeared on foreheads as a blessing the next morning.
⏰
Bhadrā: Critical Timing
Holikā Dahana must NOT be performed during Bhadrā kāla. This inauspicious period (related to Viṣṭi Karaṇa) varies by location. Only light the fire after Bhadrā ends: use this page for your city's exact window.
🌾
New Barley in the Fire
Roasting new spring barley (jau) in the Holikā bonfire is a pre-Vedic ritual celebrating the first crop of the year. Roasted grains are eaten and shared as prasāda: the earth's first offering of the season.
🙏
Prahlāda's Victory
The bonfire re-enacts Holikā carrying Prahlāda into the fire. Holikā burns; Prahlāda is saved. The ritual is a reminder that sincere devotion (bhakti) is immune even to fire, even to death.
🌺
Pūjā Rituals
The Holikā pūjā involves applying fresh cow-dung (gobara) to the bonfire pit, decorating it with mango leaves, and performing āratī. The priest lights the fire as the community watches and prays.
🌈
Gateway to Holī
Holikā Dahana night ends with a late-night celebration. The next morning at dawn Holī (Dhūleṭī) begins: throwing colours, soaking with water, and visiting neighbours with gulāla and sweets.
