Janmāṣṭamī

Janmāṣṭamī (Kṛṣṇa Janmāṣṭamī, Gokulāṣṭamī) celebrates the birth of Lord Kṛṣṇa, the eighth avatar of Viṣṇu, on Kṛṣṇa Pakṣa Aṣṭamī (Śrāvaṇa Kṛṣṇa Aṣṭamī under the amānta month reckoning used across South and West India, Bhādrapada Kṛṣṇa Aṣṭamī under the pūrṇimānta reckoning used across North India). Tradition holds that Kṛṣṇa was born at the darkest hour of the night (midnight) under the Rohiṇī nakṣatra, to end the tyranny of his uncle, the demon king Kaṃsa.

The story: Kṛṣṇa's parents, Vasudeva and Devakī, were imprisoned by Kaṃsa, who had been prophesied to die at the hands of Devakī's eighth child. As Kṛṣṇa was born at midnight, the prison chains fell away and the guards fell asleep. Vasudeva carried the infant Kṛṣṇa across a flooding Yamunā river to Gokula, exchanging him for Yaśodā's newborn daughter to protect him from Kaṃsa. Kṛṣṇa grew up in Gokula and Vṛndāvana as a cowherd, beloved for his mischief, his flute, and his devotion: before eventually returning to slay Kaṃsa.

Devotees observe a day-long fast, break it only after the midnight pūjā marking Kṛṣṇa's birth moment, and celebrate with bhajans, Kṛṣṇa Līlā reenactments, and decorating cradles (jhūlan) for the infant deity. In Maharashtra and Gujarat, the festival is marked by the spectacular Dahī Haṇḍī: human pyramids competing to break a pot of curd hung high above the street, reenacting young Kṛṣṇa's love of stealing butter.

Smārta and Vaiṣṇava traditions sometimes observe Janmāṣṭamī on different calendar dates: both use the same underlying Aṣṭamī/Rohiṇī rules, but Vaiṣṇava tradition applies additional tie-breaking rules (a stricter midnight-nakṣatra test, then a weekday preference) that can shift the Vaiṣṇava date a day later than the Smārta date.

Kṛṣṇa Janma Muhūrta
The birth is marked at Madhya Rātri (midnight): the moment prison chains fell from Vasudeva and Devakī. Devotees gather for Niśīta pūjā, rock the infant Kṛṣṇa's cradle, and offer prayers precisely at this muhūrta.

Kṛṣṇa is traditionally believed to have been born as the moon rose that night. Candrodaya is noted alongside the midnight muhūrta as part of the night's significance, though the pūjā itself centres on Madhya Rātri.

Smārta and Vaiṣṇava Janmāṣṭamī can fall on different days in some years. Both follow Aṣṭamī+Rohiṇī rules, but Vaiṣṇava tradition applies stricter tie-breaking (midnight-nakṣatra, then weekday) that can push its date a day later.
