The day after Makara Sankranti: honouring the cattle
Kanuma (కనుమ) is the day after Makara Sankranti, the third day of the great Sankranti festival of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, after Bhogi and Sankranti.
Kanuma honours the cattle that work the fields. They are bathed, their horns painted and their necks hung with bells and garlands, and they are fed a special meal. Families gather for a feast, and by an old custom people stay home on Kanuma and do not set out on journeys.
In Konaseema the day is famous for Prabhala Theertham at Jaggannathathota, where the tall decorated prabhas of the eleven Rudras are carried across the fields and streams.
