About
Krittika Vratam is a monthly observance dedicated to Lord Skanda (Murugan, Kartikeya, Subramanya), celebrated on the day Krittika Nakshatra prevails. Because the Moon transits Krittika roughly every 27-28 days, this vratam recurs about thirteen times a year.
Krittika Nakshatra, ruled by the fire-god Agni, is closely linked to Kartikeya's own birth story: he was raised by the six Krittika mothers (the Pleiades), which is why he is also known as Shanmukha ("six-faced"). Devotees observe a fast on this day and offer prayers to Murugan seeking courage, protection from obstacles, and spiritual growth. Many temples dedicated to Murugan hold special abhishekams and poojas on Krittika days.
