About

Maṅgalavāra Vrata

Mangalavara Vrata (मङ्गलवार व्रत), also called the Bhauma Vrata, is the Tuesday vrata of Mangala (Angaraka, Bhauma, Kuja). In the Padma Purana, as given in the Vratraj, Mangala himself tells it to the sage Gautama. It may be begun on any Tuesday and is kept for twenty-one Tuesdays, by women and especially by men.

How to keep the vrata

When to eat

The story of Nandaka's daughter, from the Padma Purana

The old Brahmana Nandaka and his wife Sunanda had no child, and adopted a Brahmana girl who in a past life had worshipped Mangala with a single mind. Every day her body gave much gold, and Nandaka grew very rich and proud. When she was ten he married her to the Brahmana Someshvara.

Years later, as Someshvara was taking her home and night fell in a mountain forest, Nandaka, out of greed, lay in wait dressed as a thief and killed his son-in-law. The young widow resolved to follow her husband, went round him, and was about to enter the fire when Mangala appeared and offered her a boon. She asked that her husband live, and Mangala made him free of age and death, and wise.

For her second boon she asked that whoever worships Mangala at daybreak on Tuesday with red sandal and red flowers be free of bondage, disease, fear of snakes, fire and enemies, and separation from loved ones. Mangala granted it and gave the rule of the twenty-one Tuesdays.

एकविंशतिभौमांश्च यो मद्भक्तो जितेन्द्रियः। एकाहारं सितान्नेन चतुर्दीपान्विते गृहे॥
ekaviṃśatibhaumāṃśca yo madbhakto jitendriyaḥ, ekāhāraṃ sitānnena caturdīpānvite gṛhe.
"My devotee who, with senses controlled, keeps twenty-one Tuesdays, eating one meal of white food, in a house lit with four lamps (is freed of every planetary affliction)."
Padma Purana, Bhaumavara Vrata (Vratraj)
भौमवारे अरुणोदयवेलायामपामार्गेण दन्तधावनं विधाय।
bhaumavāre aruṇodayavelāyām apāmārgeṇa dantadhāvanaṃ vidhāya.
"On Tuesday, at the time of arunodaya, clean the teeth with an apamarga twig (and begin the vrata)."
Vratraj, Mangalavara Vrata
अङ्गारकाय विद्महे शक्तिहस्ताय धीमहि। तन्नो भौमः प्रचोदयात्॥
aṅgārakāya vidmahe śaktihastāya dhīmahi, tanno bhaumaḥ pracodayāt.
"We know Angaraka; we meditate on him who holds the shakti; may Bhauma inspire us."
Mangala gayatri, Vratraj, Mangalavara Vrata
अग्निर्मूर्धा दिवः ककुत्पतिः पृथिव्या अयम्। अपां रेतांसि जिन्वति॥
agnir mūrdhā divaḥ kakut patiḥ pṛthivyā ayam, apāṃ retāṃsi jinvati.
"Agni is the head and summit of heaven, the lord of the earth; he quickens the seeds of the waters."
Rig Veda 8.44.16; the arghya, japa and homa mantra of this vrata
