About

Nārada Jayantī

Nārada Jayantī commemorates the birth of Sage Nārada (Devarṣi Nārada), the celestial rishi and devotee-messenger of Lord Viṣṇu, renowned throughout the Purāṇas as a wandering sage, storyteller, and musician who carries news and counsel between the worlds of gods, sages, and mortals.

The observance falls on Amānta Vaiśākha Kṛṣṇa Pakṣa Prathamā, the same tithi is called Pūrṇimānta Jyeṣṭha Kṛṣṇa Pakṣa Prathamā under this site's other supported month-naming convention; both names refer to the identical day, not two different rules.

Day-selection is sunrise-vyāpti: the civil day is the one whose sunrise the Prathamā tithi is ruling. In years when the tithi rules two consecutive sunrises (a vṛddhi tithi), the first day is taken.

The observance is kept only in a Nija (normal) Vaiśākha month. An ordinary Adhika (leap) Vaiśākha is excluded, with the Nija occurrence taken instead, except when that Adhika month is Saṃsarpa-samjñaka (its own Nija counterpart never arrives that lunar cycle), in which case the Adhika occurrence itself is kept.

Nārada Mantra
jayati jagati māyāṃ yasya kāyādhavaste vacana-racanam ekaṃ kevalaṃ cākalayya | dhruvapadam api yāto yatkṛpāto dhruvo'yaṃ sakala-kuśalapātraṃ brahmaputraṃ nato'smi ||
“Victorious in the world is he whose mere fashioning of words alone overcomes maya; by whose grace this Dhruva attained even the fixed, unshakeable position (dhruvapada). I bow to this son of Brahma, the vessel of all auspiciousness.”
