Thayanar, a Vellala of Kanamangalam, offered red rice, red greens and tender mango pickle to Shiva every day. Even in poverty, working as a labourer, he kept this offering.

One day he stumbled from hunger and the offering spilled into a crack in the earth. Grieving, he began to cut his own throat with his sickle (arivaal), and Shiva's hand rose from the crack to stop him.
