Vicharasarman, a brahmin boy of Thiruseignalur, tended the village cows and bathed a Linga he had made of sand with their milk. His father Echadattan, told the milk was being wasted, came in anger and kicked the pots aside.
Absorbed in worship, the boy struck his father's leg with a staff that became an axe. Shiva appeared, embraced him, made him Chandeshvara, the steward of all His offerings, and gave him His own garland.
