A Chera king of Kodungallur who heard the sound of Nataraja's anklets at the end of his daily worship. Once he bowed before a washerman whose body, white with dried saline earth, reminded him of holy ash.
He became the close friend of Sundarar and composed the Thirukkailaya Gnana Ula. When Sundarar was called to Kailasa, Cheraman followed on his horse, chanting the Panchakshara in its ear.
