An oil-merchant of Thiruvotriyur who lit countless lamps in the temple day and night. When Shiva tested him and his wealth was gone, he worked at others' oil presses, sold his house, and even tried to sell his wife to buy oil.

When there was still no oil, he began to cut his own throat to fill the lamps with his blood. Shiva held his hand and took him to His abode.
