A wealthy chief of Irukkuvelur who spent his wealth lighting lamps in Shiva's temples. When he became poor, he moved to Chidambaram, cut and sold kanampul grass, and bought ghee for the lamps.
One day no one bought the grass, so he burned the grass itself as a lamp, and when it ran short he set his own hair alight. Shiva accepted his devotion and took him to His abode.
