Thinnan, son of the hunter chief Nagan of Uduppur, found the Shiva Linga on the Kalahasti hill and worshipped it in a hunter's way, bathing it with water carried in his mouth and offering meat he had tasted.
Seeing blood flow from the Linga's eye, he plucked out his own eye and placed it there. When the other eye bled, he set his foot on it as a mark and began to pluck his second eye, until Shiva stopped him, saying "Stop, Kannappa", and kept him at His right side.
