காரைக்கால் அம்மையார் · पंगुनी, स्वाती
Punithavathi, daughter of the merchant Dhanadattan of Karaikkal, gave one of two mangoes sent home by her husband Paramadattan to a hungry devotee. When her husband asked for the second, Shiva gave her a fruit in answer to her prayer; her frightened husband left her as one divine.
She prayed to give up her beauty and was given the form of a pey (ghost). She climbed Kailasa on her hands, Shiva called her "Ammai" (Mother), and she sings at His feet at Thiruvalangadu.
