In a past life he was a spider at Thiruvanaikka who wove a canopy over the Linga, which an elephant worshipping there kept tearing away. The two fought and both died.

By Shiva's grace the spider was reborn as a Chola prince. As king he built many temples for Shiva on raised platforms that no elephant could enter.
