A Vellala chief of Kanjaru from a family of army commanders, who regarded Shiva's devotees as his masters. On the wedding day of his daughter to Eyarkon Kalikamar, Shiva came as a Mahavrati ascetic and asked for her long hair to make a sacred cord.
Manakkanjarar cut her tresses at once and offered them. Shiva revealed Himself with Uma, blessed the family and restored the bride's hair.
