A merchant of Madurai who ground sandal paste every day for the Lord of the Alavai temple. When a Karnataka king who followed Jainism seized Madurai and stopped his supply of sandalwood, he ground his own elbow on the stone, and Shiva's voice stopped him.

After that king died, the royal elephant chose Murthi as king. He ruled the Pandya land wearing only holy ash, rudraksha and matted hair as his three emblems.
