Nandanar of Adhanur, of the Pulaiyar community, supplied leather and strings for temple drums. At Thirupunkur, Shiva moved the Nandi aside so that Nandanar could see Him from outside.

Longing to see Nataraja at Chidambaram, he said each day "I will go tomorrow", and so was called Thirunalaippovar. At Chidambaram, at Shiva's command, he passed through a sacred fire, rose as a sage and merged with Nataraja.
