Pasupathiyar, a brahmin of Thiruthalaiyur, stood day and night in the temple tank, chanting the Sri Rudram with folded hands above his head.
Pleased by his constant chanting, Shiva granted him a place at His feet, and he became known as Rudra Pasupathi.
