Sundaramurthi Nayanar Guru Puja 2027: August 8, Mount Vernon

Born at Thirunavalur to Sadaiyanar and Isaignaniyar in an Adi Shaiva family, he was raised by the chieftain Narasinga Munaiyaraiyar; at his wedding, Shiva came as an old man holding a bond that claimed him as a servant, and led him to Thiruvennainallur, where he sang his first hymn, "Pitha Pirai Soodi".

Shiva treated him as a friend, and at Tiruvarur he sang the Thiruthondar Thogai, the list of devotees that the Periya Puranam expands. He reached Kailasa on a white elephant sent by Shiva.
