ଆଡି 18: ଭରା ନଦୀମାନଙ୍କ ପ୍ରତି କୃତଜ୍ଞତା
Aadi Perukku (ஆடிப்பெருக்கு), also called Padinettam Perukku, falls on the 18th day of the Tamil month Aadi. In Aadi the monsoon fills the Kaveri and the other rivers of Tamil Nadu, and the day gives thanks for the water that feeds the fields and the people.
Families go to the river bank, to a tank or a well, with lamps, flowers, turmeric, kumkum and offerings of rice: chitrannam such as lemon, tamarind, coconut and curd rice, and sweet pongal. They worship the river as the Mother. Women pray for the long life of their husbands and change the sacred thread; newly married couples come together to offer worship, and young women pray for a good marriage.
Farmers begin sowing at this time, so the day also blesses the new season.
At Srirangam, on the island between the Kaveri and the Kollidam, Namperumal comes in procession to the Amma Mandapam on the Kaveri bank, and the temple offers the river her gifts, silk, a garland and auspicious items, as to a daughter of the house.
