Sankashti Chaturthi is the Chaturthi of the waning moon, kept every month for Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles. Devotees fast through the day and break the fast after seeing the moon rise and offering arghya to it and prayers to Ganesha.
When the Sankashti falls on a Tuesday, the day of Angaraka (Mangala), it is Angaraki Sankashti (अंगारकी). It comes only a few times a year and is held the most auspicious of all the Sankashtis: a single Angaraki is said to bring the merit of keeping the fast all year. Great crowds gather at Ganesha temples such as Siddhivinayak in Mumbai and the Ashtavinayak temples.
