About
Ashvattha Maruti Pujan
Ashvattha Maruti Pujan (अश्वत्थ मारुति पूजन) is the combined worship of the Ashvattha tree (peepal, Ficus religiosa) and Maruti/Hanuman, observed on every Saturday of Amanta Shravana masa, especially in Maharashtra. The Ashvattha branch or tree is worshipped first with water, gandha, and flowers, followed by Hanuman puja with shodashopachara (16-step worship), sindura, and the recitation of stotras.
As a named, organized annual observance, Ashvattha-Maruti Pujan is a relatively modern Maharashtra practice, popularized by the Aniruddha tradition beginning in 1997. The two components it brings together, however, are each far older: Ashvattha worship traces to the Bhagavad Gita itself (10.26, aśvatthaḥ sarvavṛkṣāṇām, "among trees, I am the Ashvattha"), and Hanuman/Maruti worship has its own long, independent tradition. In this puja, the Ashvattha represents the sacred tree while Maruti/Hanuman is the principal deity worshipped.
ॐ अश्वत्थाय नमः।
oṃ aśvatthāya namaḥ
"Salutations to the Ashvattha (peepal tree)."
Traditional Ashvattha puja mantra
मूलतो ब्रह्मरूपाय मध्यतो विष्णुरूपिणे। अग्रतः शिवरूपाय वृक्षराजाय ते नमः॥
mūlato brahmarūpāya madhyato viṣṇurūpiṇe, agrataḥ śivarūpāya vṛkṣarājāya te namaḥ.
"Salutations to you, O king of trees, who at the root is Brahma's form, in the middle is Vishnu's form, and at the top is Shiva's form."
"I take refuge in Sri Rama's messenger, swift as thought and equal in speed to the wind, of controlled senses, foremost among the wise, son of Vayu, chief of the monkey army."
