Bhadrapada Shukla Shashti: honouring Balarama, Krishna's elder brother
Shri Balarama Jayanti commemorates the birth of Balarama (also called Baladeva or Balbhadra), the elder brother of Lord Krishna, observed on Bhadrapada Shukla Shashti.
Balarama is revered as an incarnation carrying the power of Shesha Naga, the divine serpent upon whom Lord Vishnu reclines, and is counted among the principal forms of Vishnu in several Puranic traditions. Known for his immense strength and his weapon the plough (hala), Balarama is closely associated with agricultural and pastoral life, and shares in many of the same childhood exploits as Krishna in Vrindavan and Gokul.
