All ten forms of Vishnu, one year, one page: every Dashavatara Jayanti in 2026
The Dashavatara (दशावतार, "ten descents") are the ten principal incarnations of Lord Vishnu, each taken to restore Dharma at a critical moment: Matsya (fish), Kurma (tortoise), Varaha (boar), Narasimha (man-lion), Vamana (dwarf), Parashurama, Rama, Krishna, Buddha, and Kalki (yet to come). Each avatar's Jayanti (appearance day) already has its own dedicated, individually computed date on this site — this page brings all ten together in one place for 2026, Mumbai.
Three points in the list carry a genuine, long-recognized difference between traditions. The seventh avatar, Rama, has both a Smarta and a Vaishnava observance — the two usually fall on the same day, but can differ by a day when Madhyahna-Kala/Trimuhurtha rules split them. Most sources then place Krishna as the eighth avatar, celebrated on Krishna Janmashtami, with Buddha as the ninth. Some Puranic sources instead hold Krishna to be Vishnu Himself (Svayam Bhagavan) rather than merely an avatar, and count Balarama — Krishna's elder brother, observed on Shri Balarama Jayanti (Bhadrapada Shukla Shashti) — as the eighth avatar in his place; in that list, Krishna himself is counted as the ninth avatar instead of Buddha, who does not appear at all. Both traditions are shown side by side below; the other seven avatars are identical either way.
