Bhadrapada Amavasya: the rare day the Sun and Moon are both in Hasta Nakshatra
Gajachhaya Yoga is a rare and highly auspicious astronomical alignment that occurs on Bhadrapada Amavasya (Ashwin Amavasya in the purnimanta reckoning), when both the Sun and the Moon are together in Hasta Nakshatra.
This alignment is traditionally regarded as one of the most powerful occasions for Shraddha and Pitru-tarpana (ancestor-remembrance rites), considered by many even more significant than an ordinary Mahalaya Amavasya Shraddha, because of the rarity and auspiciousness of this specific Sun-Moon-Nakshatra coincidence.
Because Gajachhaya Yoga depends on a precise alignment of both luminaries in the same nakshatra on Amavasya, it does not occur every year -- it is a genuinely occasional, calendar-dependent event.
As with other Shraddha occasions, observances on this day typically include tarpana (water offerings), pinda daana, and charitable giving in honor of departed ancestors.
