Jyeshtha Shukla Dashami: the descent of the Ganga to earth
Shri Ganga Dashahara commemorates the day the river Ganga descended from the heavens to earth, in response to King Bhagiratha's penance to liberate the souls of his ancestors, observed on Jyeshtha Shukla Dashami.
The name combines "Dasha" (ten) and "Hara" (removes/destroys) -- bathing in the Ganga on this day is held to remove ten kinds of sins (dasha-vidha-paapa). Devotees bathe in the Ganga or any sacred river, offer prayers, and perform Ganga Puja.
