Vaishakha Shukla Saptami: the descent of the Ganga
Ganga Janma (also called Ganga Saptami or Ganga Jayanti) commemorates the descent of the river Ganga to earth, observed on Vaishakha Shukla Saptami.
Where Ganga Dashahara (Jyeshtha Shukla Dashami) marks the day Ganga's waters actually touched the earth after King Bhagiratha's penance, Ganga Saptami is held as her birth itself -- the day she first appeared, before her descent. Devotees bathe in the Ganga or any sacred river, offer prayers, and perform Ganga Puja on this day.
