Vaishakha Bahula Dashami: Hanuman's birthday in the Telugu lands
Hanumat Jayanti is the birthday of Sri Hanuman as kept in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, on the Dashami of the dark fortnight (Bahula Dashami) of Vaishakha.
The Parashara Samhita, revered in the Telugu lands as the great text of Hanuman's life, places his birth in Vaishakha, in the dark fortnight, on a Dashami. Many devotees begin the Hanuman Deeksha on Chaitra Purnima, wear saffron or red, keep a disciplined life of prayer, and close the vow on this day.
Temples such as Kondagattu and countless village shrines of Anjaneya fill with devotees. The day is kept with abhishekam, tamalapaku (betel leaf) worship, recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa and the Sundara Kanda, and the distribution of prasad.
