Janmashtami (Krishna Janmashtami, Gokulashtami) celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu, on Krishna Paksha Ashtami -- Shravana Krishna Ashtami under the amanta month reckoning used across South and West India, Bhadrapada Krishna Ashtami under the purnimanta reckoning used across North India. Tradition holds that Krishna was born at the darkest hour of the night (midnight) under the Rohini nakshatra, to end the tyranny of his uncle, the demon king Kansa.

The story: Krishna's parents, Vasudeva and Devaki, were imprisoned by Kansa, who had been prophesied to die at the hands of Devaki's eighth child. As Krishna was born at midnight, the prison chains fell away and the guards fell asleep. Vasudeva carried the infant Krishna across a flooding Yamuna river to Gokul, exchanging him for Yashoda's newborn daughter to protect him from Kansa. Krishna grew up in Gokul and Vrindavan as a cowherd, beloved for his mischief, his flute, and his devotion: before eventually returning to slay Kansa.

Devotees observe a day-long fast, break it only after the midnight puja marking Krishna's birth moment, and celebrate with bhajans, Krishna Leela reenactments, and decorating cradles (jhulan) for the infant deity. In Maharashtra and Gujarat, the festival is marked by the spectacular Dahi Handi: human pyramids competing to break a pot of curd hung high above the street, reenacting young Krishna's love of stealing butter.

Smarta and Vaishnava traditions sometimes observe Janmashtami on different calendar dates in the same year.
