मदुरै चित्तिरै तिरुविळा का नौवाँ दिन: देवी मीनाक्षी आठों दिशाएँ जीतकर भगवान शिव से मिलती हैं
Meenakshi Dik Vijayam (Digvijayam) is the ninth day of the Madurai Chithirai Thiruvizha, when Goddess Meenakshi sets out to conquer the eight directions.
The story. As queen of Madurai, Meenakshi led her army across the world. The kings of the earth and the guardians of the directions, even Indra and his hosts, fell before her. At last she reached Kailasa and defeated Shiva's own ganas. When Lord Shiva himself came out to face her, her third breast vanished, as the heavenly voice had foretold at her birth, and she knew him as her lord. Her conquest ended in love, and Shiva promised to come to Madurai to marry her.
At the temple. Meenakshi goes out in procession on the Indra Vimanam, re-enacting her victories across the city, while Sundareswarar follows on his own vahanam. It is the eve of the wedding, and Madurai fills with families arriving for the Thirukalyanam.
