About

Nagula Panchami

Nagula Panchami (నాగుల పంచమి) is the Shukla Panchami of Shravana, the Telugu name of Naga Panchami, the day of the Naga devatas, the serpent deities.

Families go early to the putta (anthill) where the snakes are believed to dwell, decorate it with turmeric and kumkum, and pour milk into it. Chalimidi (rice flour with jaggery), chimmili and sprouted lentils are offered, and cotton threads are placed at the anthill. Many fast until the puja is done, praying for the family's protection and for the children's welfare.

In the Telugu lands the serpents are also worshipped on Nagula Chavithi in Kartika, the greater of the two days in Andhra.
