Samaveda Upakarma is the annual renewal of the sacred thread (yajnopavita) observed by Samaveda-following households, traditionally anchored to Hasta Nakshatra in Bhadrapada Shukla Paksha.
Which of two days Hasta Nakshatra falls on is decided by how much of the afternoon (Aparahna Kala) it covers on each day. When that day is obstructed by an eclipse, Sankranti or planetary combustion (for first-timers, also Guru in Leo), Upakarma is done on that same Bhadrapada day with parihara. In the Tamil Sampradaya, Hasta Nakshatra in the dark fortnight of Kanya masa is taken first, and the Bhadrapada day with parihara only if that too is obstructed.
