About

Vishu

Vishu (Kerala's new year) falls on the day the sun enters the zodiac sign of Mesha (Aries), known as Mesha Sankranti. The name Vishu comes from the Sanskrit vishuvam, meaning equal: referring to the ancient belief that on this day, the day and night are of equal length (a solar equinox tradition). For Kerala, this solar crossing marks the beginning of a new cycle of time, a new agricultural year, and a renewal of divine grace flowing into every home.

The most defining ritual of Vishu is the Vishukani: the first sight of the morning. The night before, the eldest woman of the household carefully arranges an auspicious collection of items in a large bell-metal uruli (vessel): a golden cucumber (kani vellarikka), coconuts, jackfruit, betel leaves and areca nut, fresh rice, coins, gold jewellery, yellow flowers (konna, Indian laburnum, Cassia fistula), a lit lamp (nilavilakku), and a small mirror. She covers it and wakes before dawn to light the lamp. Each family member is then led to the room with eyes closed and opens them only when standing before the Vishukani: so the very first thing they see in the new year is this auspicious arrangement. The belief is that what you see first on Vishu sets the tone of your entire year.

Vishu is also celebrated with two cherished traditions. Kaineetam (the gift of money) is given by elders to children, younger family members, and household staff. The gift must be of new currency; the amount matters less than the act of giving. And Sadya (the grand feast on a banana leaf) brings extended family together for a meal of 20-30 dishes including parippu (dal), sambar, rasam, avial, thoran, olan, pickle, payasam, and pappad. The same feast coincides with Tamil New Year (Puthandu), which falls on the same solar event.

विषुवं नाम संक्रान्तिर्मेषस्थे सूर्यनन्दने। सौभाग्यं सर्वसम्पत्तिर्भवत्येव नसंशयः।।
Viṣuvaṃ nāma saṃkrāntir meṣasthe sūryanandane, saubhāgyaṃ sarvasampattirbhavatyeva nasaṃśayaḥ.
"The transition called Vishu, when the Sun is in Aries: there is absolutely no doubt that it brings auspiciousness and all prosperity."

Vishukani (First Sight)
The most sacred moment of Vishu: before dawn, family members are led with eyes closed to the room where the Kani is arranged. They open their eyes only when standing before the lamp-lit, flower-decked, gold-laden arrangement. The first sight of the new year must be beautiful, auspicious, and divine: setting the visual tone for all 365 days to follow.
🌼
The Auspicious Arrangement
The Vishukani contains: konna flowers (Indian laburnum, bright yellow), golden cucumber (kani vellarikka), coconuts, jackfruit, rice, betel leaves, areca nut, coins, gold jewellery, a small mirror, and a lit nilavilakku (brass lamp). Each item symbolises an aspect of prosperity: the mirror ensures Lakshmi sees her own reflection and stays. The arrangement is a miniature altar of abundance.
💰
Kaineetam (Gift of Money)
After seeing the Vishukani, elders distribute Kaineetam (gifts of new currency notes) to children, younger relatives, and household staff. The notes must be new (freshly printed or unfolded), and the act of giving must be done with warmth. Kaineetam is one of the few Indian festivals where the gifting of money is the central ritual rather than an optional courtesy.

Kerala Sadya Feast
Vishu Sadya is served on a fresh banana leaf with 20 to 30 dishes arranged in a precise order. Essentials include parippu (yellow dal with ghee), sambar, rasam, three types of avial, thoran (stir-fried vegetables with coconut), olan (ash gourd in coconut milk), two types of payasam, and pappad. The meal is eaten from left to right in a specific ritual sequence.
☀️
Coincidence with Tamil New Year
Vishu falls on the same day as Tamil Puthandu (Tamil New Year) and Baisakhi in Punjab: all three mark the solar entry into Aries. In Tamil Nadu, the Kani tradition is called Kanni; in Punjab, Baisakhi is the harvest festival. The shared solar moment unites these diverse traditions across South and North India in one great spring solar observance.
🍮
Vishu Katta (Rice Pudding)
Vishu Katta is a traditional Kerala sweet made from rice flour, coconut milk, and jaggery: steamed in plantain leaves into firm squares. It is the quintessential Vishu sweet, made in large batches and shared with neighbours. Along with Vishu Kanji (rice porridge) eaten as the first meal, and Ada Pradhaman (jackfruit payasam), it completes the food identity of Kerala's new year.
