Amanta Ashvayuja Krishna Trayodashi: lighting a lamp for Yama on the eve of Diwali
Yama Deepa Daana (also written Yamadeepdaan, Yama Deep Daan, or Yamadeepam) is the practice of lighting a lamp for Yama, the lord of death and dharma, on the evening of Krishna Trayodashi of Ashvayuja (Ashwin) month, the same calendar day widely observed as Dhanteras.
Tradition (commonly cited to the Skanda Purana) holds that placing a lamp outside the house for Yama on this evening wards off untimely death for the household. In many homes the lamp is lit with mustard or sesame oil and placed facing south, the direction associated with Yama, sometimes accompanied by a rangoli and a full complement of thirteen lamps around the home in observance of the same evening's Dhanteras rites.
